For those interested (TIKI scantlings)
Here's the message from Nathan about TIKI scantlings:
I am using a far eastern (malaysian) ply that is stiffer and harder
than the okoume which wharram specifies for his boats it is all 6mm,
although the cockpit is 9mm and the bunk tops are 9mm and the cabin
roofs are 9mm the hulls and decks and cabin sides and bulkheads are
all 6mm, but have 19x25mm stiffeners diagonally accross each are
between bulkheads. all my ply is 5 ply.
A friend brian walker sailing magiccarpet to Grenada from Trinidad
+tobago built his boat out of 5 ply 6mm french ockoume ply very
light!
- as specified for the Pahi 26 The thing with a catamaran is to keep
it as strong and light as possible 5 ply 8mm is like a tiki 31 or
tiki
38 too heavy
can you get 5ply 6mm ockoume?? Everyone who has built a wharram gives
the same advice stick to the plans.
he knows what he is talking about and everything he does is for a
reason - and his boats are really strong. the beams on our boat weigh
as much as a hull i would guess - really strong!!!! also remember it
has all those curves, will 8mm ply be able to do that??
we have spent longer than the time wharram specifies but we sanded
between each coat of epoxy and we were also building outside and so
rain really ruined timing. again our friend brian walker built his in
a year.
depends on the finish you want and how much you make yourself or buy.
Best, Pippo
