Re: [bolger] Wood cleats
FBBB --
I got myself a 6 foot piece of 5/4 x 6 mahogany and set to work. So
far so good. Even if the cleats don't work, it was worth the purchase
price just to work with such a nice piece of wood.
Progress photos shortly.

One of the nicest woods to make cleats from is Locust (Robinia
pseudoacacia). Strong, easy to work, finishes nicely, very durable
and rot resistant. It grows most everywhere, so find a neighbor who
has cut one down a year or more ago (or a firewood huckster) as one
piece of firewood has enough material in it for several cleats.
Also "Boatbuilder" May/June 2000 has a good article by Thomas Firth
Jones called "Making Your Own Wooden Cleats"
Personal observation, most homemade wooden cleats I've seen are to
big
and bulky, stick to the dimensions given by Jones, or Bolger.

The scooner needs cleats, a mess of them. I'm thinking home-made
wood. Anyone got any tips or tragedies they'd like to share?
