Re: Micro berths and floorboards
Hi Pippo,
Yes,you must install a small cleat/batten along the inner
surface of the hull side. Also, the inboard side of the berth flat
(facing the centerline) will need a vertical wall.I used the
waterline to establish the horizontal(level) surface.Once this basic
frame work is installed, simply make a pattern for the top panel. The
inboard edge should be dead straight while the outboard edge will
follow the contour of the curving hull sides.
Regarding Stephen L.Davis;I am refering to the illustration of
the MICRO he did,for a collection of Phil Bolger vignettes in
woodenboat magazine, and which can be found on YOUR MICRO WEB PAGE.
Sincerely,
Peter Lenihan

Never mind about Stephen L. Davis, I just realized that I've put that
illustration on line myself... I'm getting older...
Best again, Pippo

Hi Peter, and thanks. PCB drawings are very marginal on the berths,
since there's no indication on how to build that stuff. I understand
that the flats must be such, i.e. horizontal. Is some reinforcement
needes along the inner hull side? More generally, how are the berths
built? And finally, you often refer to Stephen L. Davis. Could you
tell which book are you referring to?
Best, Pippo

Hi Pippo,
Yes,I did build the berth flats in my MICRO,topping them with
custom 4"closed cell foam mattresses, and used that beautiful Stephen
L.Davis illustration(art!)for inspiration.Bellow my berth cushions I
have two small but neat storage areas on each side.Very useful for
storing small things safely then forgetting where you put them.Lots
of nifty surprises await during the spring fitting out!
Are the berth flats necessary?Well.....depends on how you like
to sleep ie;on your back, stomach or side. Also, just how little comfort
you are willing to put up with!I know I get a better nights sleep in
my MICRO then at home!
I cannot help but think that the added structure inside also
contributes to the overall rigidity of the bottom........
Compared to building the whole boat, the relative"savings" in
labour from not building the berth flats is,small potatoes!
Sincerely,
Peter Lenihan, feeling the nippy sting of a rapidly approaching winter
after 5 glorious weeks of cruising in my MICRO,with company most
congenial,on the pathetically polluted St.Lawrence River.........

Dear all - I'd like to hear from Micro and Long Micro builders out
there if and how did they build the berths inside. Are they, as well
as the floorboards, really necessary? I was thinking of just throwing
inside two inflatable mattresses... Skipping them would save a
considerable amount of work...
