either -- around 50 cents a foot for 2x4s. The Despot is cheeper, but
60 miles away and the quality's no better. That 8 dollar piece of
mahogany was a JOY to work with, easy to cut, shape, sand. No waste
due to funky grain, knots, etc.
I just came in from hoisting the sails, first time she's had main,
foresail and jib up at the same time. The mainsail clew is a little
droopy, a recut is in order. But she looks great none the less.
Rudder, tiller, and DB today and maybe we'll sail tomorrow.

David,
Nice picture!Looks like you also have the beginings of a fine
set of small handrails if you avoid cutting off little bits for the
cleats...
I recall my first attempts at making wooden cleats for my SURF
and then later for an ELVER.With my youthful exuberance and a head
full of stories from my Dad,I never bothered with exotics like
mahogany but instead used the wood from shipping pallets. My brother
and I never did find out what sort of wood they were made from(birch?
maple?red oak?) and simply called it"cleatwood" and brother did we
make cleats!Mooring cleats,thumb cleats,fairleads,big ones and little
ones....there seemed to be no end to it.We even started making cheek
pieces for wooden blocks.....Very addictive stuff, indeed!
Anyway,continued success with your project!
Sincerely,
Peter Lenihan
