We sewed the raw edges with regular heavy duty thread on a regular sewing
machine. The thread was synthetic, not cotton or wool. Stress points were
doubled or trippled with progressively smaller patches and the areas taking
the grommets were also trippled. I think the grommet tool was specially
constructed for use on polytarp. The polytarp sail on my Tortoise must be
over a year old now, used occasionally in blustry weather and no problems or
need to patch/resew. Regards, Warren

1 - I drew lines on the polytarp where I wanted the finished edge to
be.
2 - Then I put carpet tape (the type with the fiber weave in it)
centered over the line.
3 - Then cut about 3" outside the outer edge of the carpet tape.
4 - Then removed wax paper backing on carpet tape, and put rope down
center of tape
5 - Folded over the carpet tape in half so the rope is now along the
outer edge.
6 - Covered the raw edges of polytarp with black duct tape. (figured
black would look better than grey on blue)

I have seen many variations of this technique, some just folding over
the polytarp with a rope in it, some laying the rope on the line, duct
tape over it, then fold and another duct tape. Not sure which is best
-- had the carpet tape in stock and it sounded like a strong solution.

The neatest part is that the lines drawn on the polytarp are the
finished edge lines, not a cut line.

I use two-sided outdoor carpet tape to reinforce the edges. the
grommets go throught the tarp folded over the tape. So far, I have
not sewn the edges and the tape has held by itself. Check out the
polytarp sail website at

Bought a polytarp 2-in-1 package at Walmart. Was cheap, only $10. Came
with 10x14 blue and 8x10 brown. Making the blue into a mutton sprit
sail.

While unpacking the polytarp from the bag, I noticed that the corners
had a plastic reinforcement piece that went around the whole corner, and
had a grommet in the center. The plastic piece is also pop-riveted to
the polytarp. I was thinking what a shame, looks really sturdy but I
have to cut it off because I need a bolt rope along the edge.

Looking closer, I noticed the edge of the polytarp was a heat sealed
fold with a small diameter cord around the entire perimeter and nice
grommets every 12". Not sure what type of cord, looks really tough, but
only 1/8" or 3/16".

SO... I used the existing edge of the polytarp as the luff. I tied the
leech and foot bolt rope to the reinforced grommets at the head and foot
of the sail.

Hope to try it this weekend, time will tell if I need to redo it.
