Re: [bolger] Re: bolger whalewatcher
Hi Fritz,
I'm not familiar with the Whalewatcher design. What's it like? I'm thinking
about a new boat now as I've just sold my Sneakeasy two days ago and am
delivering it to NJ today!

Hi:
I have been interested in this design for a long time, and would
greatly appreciate it if you could post some pictures to the "files"
section. Thanks.

I too stopped to see Chuck's whalewatcher, so as of August 1999 it was
still there in Richmond, VA. It's on a custom-made trailer, not sure if
its tandem wheeled or not, but I think a good pickup could pull it OK.
Its a big boat though, so I agree that routine trailer launching would be a
bit of a chore. Very interesting study in geometry to see Whalewatcher in
3D! I've got some pictures of it stashed somewhere, if anybody is
interested in the design. Chuck is very knowledgeble about the boat (Black
Skimmer too) and great to talk to.

I recently checked out the November/December 1995 Woodenboat article
on Beach Cruisers. There ain't no Whalewatcher in there, but they do
have Birdwatcher. They define a Beach Cruiser as lightweight for
beaching, with a flat bottom to take the ground upright. I returned
BWOM to the library, so I've forgotten what the specs on Whalewatcher
are, but I am considering Birdwatcher. I thought that Whalewatcher
was quite large?

The hull mentioned in BWAOM was owned by Chuck Raynor when I visited
him two or three years ago and saw it. Chuck had it in a warehouse in
south Richmond, Va, said he was going to complete it soon. He has the
skill. It was 3/4 built then. It is a big impressive boat, with a
truly massive spar. Trailerable? Not on my trailer! Anyhow, it has a
very open boat feel, looks quite comfy and would no doubt be a great
Bay sailer.

I'm deciding on plans to build a boat and I have read Boats With An
Open Mind among many other books and websites. I see Whalewatcher
being of a good size and weight for my needs with a minimum of
modification. Basically I'm looking for a trailerable beach cruiser
for trips up to several days of sail mostly on lakes and rivers but
with occasional passages in the Chesapeake and the Gulf of Mexico.
Has anyone built one? Sailed one?
Thanks for any info
