For the record, the design name is Master Hand. Leading dimensions
are 22'6" x 18'9" x 7'11" x 4'0". She has a lead ballast casting of
2800 lbs.

He wrote, "She could stand a higher rig, as much as two or three feet
more mast and two feet longer gaff in most waters, I should think,
and that much without any increase in mast diameter; but in some
places where it blows hard habitually, or if you like to minimize
panic parties and don't mind giving the engine frequent use, there's
a case to be made for short rigs. I would now abolish the plank gaff
because I find it ugly and inconvenient to stow, substituting a round
one about 2 1/2" in diameter in the middle and tapered to 1 1/2" at
each end."

Also, "This is about the smallest boat which can look like a
Friendship and still have something usable as a cabin." The plans
show two berths crowded around a toilet and a locker.

In "American Small Sailing Craft," Chapelle's prime examples of
Friendship sloops were 25' on deck (i.e. excludes bowsprit and
overhand of the boom), so this one is only a little smaller. He
comments that they went up to about 38' in size. The originals had
rocks for inside ballast. They were used as lobster boats, so low
freeboard aft was necessary to allow the crew to deal with the pots.
General handiness was a more important sailing characteristic than
all out speed, but they are great sailers. One reason is that the
rigs are large, which was because there is often very light air in
Maine in the summer. Often a fisherman would have a summer rig and a
winter rig.

Peter Culler designed some in various sizes, as well.

Peter
Bolger included this design in his first book, Small Boats. Note the
gaff made out of a plank. As I remember, the write-up suggested that
he had had second thoughts about that feature.

Peter
Note: I omitted mentioning that this Bolger design is a skilful downsizing.
The Original Friendship Sloops (des. McLain 1904)
were Maine Fishing boats, Gaff Cutters with a longish stern overhang
and a clipper bow, about 27 LWL, 38 lod with
a narrow beam. Carrying nearly a thousand sq feet they could really
move. Most of this sail area was in a huge main with a 30ft boom!!
Replicas very true to the orig (but FG) are made by
by Jarvis Newman.(Maine)
