Trailer

Tim,

You might contact "Floating the Apple" or one of the other
building/rowing organizations. They have very light boats, 25-30',
and travel around quite a bit. I'm sure they need trailers.

Floating the Apple builds 27' (?) harbor pilot gigs, 4 oars,
helmsman, and sail rig, lightly built of lapstrake ply and epoxy.
Built and manned by NYC high school kids.

I'd assume donations are tax deductible, and you can be sure it would
get used.

I can get you contact info...

Curtis

How long? How skinny? I'm currently building a Light Schooner that is 25 ft
x 5 ft. and will probably weigh between 400-600 lbs. New York is not too far
from Baltimore if you've got what I need. If anyone closer wants to take it,
that's fine since I live near the Chesapeake and shouldn't have too much
difficulty finding a suitable trailer.

Manhattan, NY or KS?

I have data convincingly disconfirming the Duhem-Quine hypothesis.
I've got a used trailer that I'd be happy to give away to a Bolger
builder. Was the original for my big Diablo, proved too lightweight,
and is now sitting in the backyard 7 miles north of Manhattan. No
bunks, extended yoke, good for a long skinny boat.

Jim:

A couple of months ago, a lady called me and said that she had a boat that
she was unable to sell, and wanted to know If I wanted to take it for free.
The boat was one of those tri-hull fiberglass things that you saw a lot in
the 70's. I gave the motor away, took the hull to the dump, and had a nice
trailer left - for free. You're right, Jim there are some bargains out
there.

Regarding trailers:
I have found several used trailers under $200. It is far easier and cheaper to
adapt an existing trailer than to start from scratch. Now admittedly, you
fellas near salt water may need a factory galvanized supertrailer, but if the
trailer is not rusted to death (and the axle/tire combo is stout enough for your
yacht) you can easily have a welder add bunks or a plate for rollers.
Last year I bought an older boat/trailer/motor combo, and sold the motor, then
the hull and ended up with the trailer for free. Look at the local classifieds
to see if there isn't such a deal with your name on it.
Lastly, boat trailers for lighter boats have very inexpensive bearings and
wheels, so don't be afraid to replace these, as these items are responsible for
most of the highway breakdowns.
Regards,
Jim

I have added four more shots of latest progress, we are in the home stretch.
Ordered the fuel tank, steering gear, nav lights, etc from Defender today...
priced a trailer ($1100 US, the materials to build one are $700, I think
I'll buy).
