Re: Tony Bingelis Lily!

Yes, the very one. Chichester had a 1924 or 1926 version with the
Renault Airdisco half-engine. I'm cheating and putting a Subaru on
the nose. I loved Chichester's book. Now there was a MAN. The
amazing thing is that he did all those wonderful things with little
in the way of funding and twice recovered from diseases that were
nearly always fatal at that point in history. I bought the book for
the sailing bits and decided to build an airplane instead....

As far as Bingelis is concerned, maybe he can be contacted via the
EAA.

Thanks.

Is that from the same airplane 'family' as Chichester's Gypsy Moth?
Have you read about his trip from England to Australia, stopping to
re-grind the engine valves every few or often? And his rebuilding of
the airplane after an accident at Lord Howe Island in the Tasman Sea?

See The Lonely Sea and the Sky, The Autobiography of Francis
Chichester, Coward-McCann, Inc, 1964.

I concur on this one. I have at least two of Tony's books. His reputation is
in the home built segment of aviation. He is not an amateur or instant boat
kind of guy. He is one of those kind who can build a masterpiece faster than
the rest of can destroy 10 sheets of AC plywood attempting to build a non
leaking barge. One of the aircraft he built was a Falco, sort of like
building a Ferrari out of wood only prettier, lighter and it flies. He
would have LOTS to offer in shop tips and structural and materials
information.

How to lure him in?

I haven't been on the list lately, due to building a 1931 DeHavilland
Moth replica for the wife. I noticed that the latest issue of EAA's
Sport Aviation has a picture of Tony Bingelis, a homebuilt airplane
guru puttering around in a completed PCB Lily! This guy is a really
big hitter in aviation and it would be cool to get him on the
bolgerlist.

Thanks.

BTW, my junior high kids completed the Windsprint, which sails well
with a loose footed lug, (but not in 40 knot winds...quite a story
there!) I built a self-designed 12 footer inspired by Wee Lassie and
rowed at least 2 hours a day this summer. It was fun, but vintage
biplanes call my name......
