Re: [bolger] Re: Saint Valery
St Valerie and Romp are two of my favorite round Bolgers. I wonder if he ever
finished design for Romp with Chinese gaff? Clyde

I should add theres a safe front cockpit above the trotterboxes.
The trurtled foredeck is a bit inaccurate, the cabin roof is more
a turtled middeck. I dunno what to think of the huge holes in the transom.
But its a useful boat that offers the possibility of doing a real long
trip.
Its better than most to get caught out in.

a turtled middeck. I dunno what to think of the huge holes in the transom.
But its a useful boat that offers the possibility of doing a real long
trip.
Its better than most to get caught out in.

The cabin is 7ft square box between the masts, accessable only by
deck hatch, no coachroof to speak of but still with 4'3" headroom.
The back half has utilities either side of the sole, thre front has V berths
extending forrd
via trotter boxes either side of the forrd centreboard.
So this makes the effective length of the cabin about half the boat.
I must admit I was astonished that the HR scaled over 4feet,
but the sheer is pretty high. Course you get a ton of
(turtled) foredeck from the arrangement.

There should be photos in the next WoodenBoat. St. Valery was also in
Boat Design Quarterly a while ago. There will be more in a future
Watercraft magazine.

Mike o'Brian's Boat Design Quarterly #10 had an article about
Sainte Valery. She is an upsize version of the concept used on
the Cartopper and others. That is, the "centerboard" is way
forward and most of the lateral load is carried by a huge rudder.
This rudder swings up for shallow water sailing or even
beaching.
Particulars:
LOA 25'2"
LOD 24'3"
Beam 6'11'
Draft 0' ,11 3/4"
Displacement (full load) 4,700 lbs.
Weight (stripped for trailer) 1,000 lbs
Water ballested
O'Brian quotes Bolger as saying "This will be a stiff boat, and a
very fast and weatherly boat when she is keenly sailed."
