Re: ailerons vs leaning

Drew,

I built a Bolger Tortoise about three years ago. Last year I added a
bolt-on outboard motor bracket to the transom for my 2hp Johnson. I do
90% of my steering by leaning. I only use it in VERY protected water,
but it is lots of fun on our local chain of small lakes.

ailerons are a means of positive control, while leaning is definitely
analog in nature. It's very similar to steering a boat via rudder or
leaning, especially in a sharp-chined craft. The problem I see with
leaning in boats or airplanes, is that it takes a more intimate
knowledge of the craft to lean, and is less exact, i.e. you're never
100% sure of the end result due to different force vectors. Just my
2 cents worth.
