stability curves
Anyone who has not seen the December issue of
Woodenboat needs to find one and read Phil Bolger's article on shoal draft and
self righting. This is a very interesting piece with pictures of his St.
Valery, and William D. Jochems designs, and interesting stability curves for
both of them. I say interesting, because I don't think I have ever seen
the immersion of the spars factored in the these graphs before. He shows a
BIG increase in righting moment at and beyond about 95 degrees. Here is
the curve:
I thought that caught in a blow in my Caprice, I
would fold the mast down, raise the leeboard, and go below. Should I
reconsider and leave the mast up? Should I run some extra PFDs up with the
halyard?
