Re: [bolger] 10 things...notching
Matthew,
I'm going the opposite direction.....the next Pointy Skiff, and anything thereafter,
will have internal chine logs. I HATE glassing around those external chine
logs and I don't particularly like the lines of the boat with them on the outside.
Having trouble with bevels, especially compound ones? If you don't have a
sliding bevel gauge, get one. They are not expensive and well worth having.
Transferring bevels from plans to plank is a snap; so is determining that pesky
bevel on the end of an internal chine log.
'nuff said.

10 THINGS I LEARNED BUILDING "POLLIWOG"
When organising some of my boat stuff recently, I came across a
scribbled list of things to remember that I had jotted down while
building my June Bug "Polliwog." I had hoped to add them to a June Bug
page on my site, but who knows when I'll get to that. So here they are,
in separate installemts, and in no particular order. Feel free to jump

1. Avoid notching.
My first boat, the Bolger Brick "Tetard," had
external chine and transom framing--no notching. My second boat, a
Bolger Yellow Leaf canoe, was build using a sort of tack-and-tape
method--again, no notching. Polliwog, in other respects a typical
Bolger-Payson Instant Boat, has internal chine logs. My novice bevels
were sloppy, with resulting poor fits in the corners of the frames,
though Bondo hides and fills all. Now I appreciate the elegant
simplicty of external chine logs.
