Re: 10 things...polyester resin

Oops, that was the price of marine EPOXY resin, Epiglass I think, at
the only boating store for miles.

4. No more polyester resin

Despite my absolute loathing of working with glass and resin, I once
again glassed the chines on this boat. After all the horrors I had
heard about polyester resin, including Lincoln Ross's report of
delamination in my own "Tetard," I should have known better. But, for
some reason I felt I had to glass the chines, and cost constraints meant
it had to be polyester. (Polyester running about $15 USD per half pint
(250 ml).

Yuck! I hated the stink, I hated the errant glass strands, I hated the
stubborn gobs of dried snot to clean up later. My really beautiful,
smooth chines (I got a new cheap power plane and sander which improved
my finish work a lot) looked awful afterwards. And the whole time a
little voice in my head was whispering, "delamination."

No more. From now on, if I can afford epoxy, I'll use it to seal the
end grain of the ply, then prime and paint as usual. It won't last
forever, of course (who will?), and when the boat wears out I get to
build another one.
