5. Leave side frames a little shorter than sides.
I admit that I didn't use top grade materials (exterior okoume ply and
clear northern pine were expensive enough, believe me!) but I had some
trouble with splitting when trying to finish the boat. New power plane
or sharp hand block plane, I still split the end grain at the tips of
the side frames when trying to trim them flush with the gunwales. Next
time, I'll just finish them off a quarter inch (5 mm) or so shorter that
the frames, smooth and neatly rounded, on the bench and leave it at
that.
