More on short/long shaft
My short shaft is a very light Mariner 4HP, and with my ample bulk near the
bows, offers little resistance to coming up out of the water. Like
Fraser's, it stops about an inch above the bottom of the rudder. I know
that Jamie's 4-stroke is considerably heavier than my wee motor, and seem to
remember that Fraser uses something a tad bigger than mine? That, plus the
fuel tanks, makes a big difference.
As Jamie says, you pays your money . . . or maybe "Horses for courses"
(geddit?)

Bill, does your transom drag under power? Mine does, then it comes up maybe
4 inches when I turn off the motor. However, judging by the gurgling from
the stern, it drags a bit when I'm sailing heeled (motor off and pulled up).
I don't know how much the motor weight (60#) and 3 gallons of gas in the
well contributes to this -- have you noticed the same?
Also, how long can you motor without filling? I like the security of the
remote tank -- lots of gas without needing to refill. But then, I'm the guy
that carried 9 gallons on a two gallon trip, and I might still be overdoing
it on a smaller scale.
(Just curious -- I've no intention of changing until the motor drops off the
stern from old age.)
