[bolger] Re: more power sharpies
Chuck,
I think you are on to something with Sharpshooter - it's basically where I
started with the 4-footer. I want more freeboard than 24 inches forward,
but my latest effort has 24 inch sides for the aft 12 feet, and I'll
probably wind up with 5 feet or so beam on the bottom panel, for more space
in the cuddy. This bottom comes out of 4x12 scarfed panels cut crosswise to
4x6 - (it just takes more of them, or accept the scrap from 4x8's, even
more).
The basic idea of bending the panels to form the flare and rocker is
definitely the way to go. I have run several more complex shapes through
Gregg's Hulls calcs, and they just don't give enough advantages to justify
the complexity. These flat bottom skiffs will pound your eyes out if
pushed, but they are not bad if you are willing to accept hull speed in
rough chop.

Don & Fritz:
Looking through 30 Odd Boats, I found Sharpshooter. I uploaded a picture,
and the plywood layout to the vault. As you can see, it is basically three
sheets of ply attached end to end and pointed. Three more sheets are
joined, then split down the middle. These two pieces become the sides.
Give the sides about a five degree flare, and that produces the rocker as
well as the sheer. This formula is too compelling to pass up easily. The
problem is the accommodations. I have about decided that what I will do is
just build the bottom, sides, and transom, instant boat style, then figure
out the rest as I go.
