[bolger] Re: Fw: more power sharpies

Capt. Orrell's plans are available from Harold Payson.
He sells them under the name of "Down East Dories".He
advertises in MAIB under that name. The mailing address
is: Down East Dories
Pleasant Beach Rd.
South Thomaston, ME
04858
It's $3.00 for the plans packet.

I think the AF4 is a "2-sheeter" (16 feet long on the bottom). We are
trying for a 3-sheeter... at 23 feet on deck, I don't think I can use the
slot-top cabin because I need the stiffening of the deck/cabin. Aft, it
will probably be a 6- or 8-inch high self-bailing cockpit deck to stiffen
the sides and provide flotation.

At this point it's just scissors and Scotch tape, anyway. Maybe someone
will suggest a similar design. I don't mind buying plans (anybody want my
unbuilt "Tennessee" plans?), I just haven't seen the right design yet.

And, two of my daughters just announced wedding plans for spring 2000, so my
time/money may be crimped considerably for a bit!

Meanwhile, the chine logs went on the 12-footer today, maybe the bottom
tomorrow, and we'll start our luan/paraply tests later in the week.

Don and Chuck:

Some of the latest scans in the Vault are starting to look alot like
Jim Michalak's AF4 model that he detailed the building of in his
newsletter in early 1999 (?).

Also, does anyone know what happenned to all the plans that used to be
offered through Capt. Jim Orrell in Galveston? I had the plans packet
from way back, but can't seem to find it anywhere. There were a bunch
of "Square-tailed dories" like sharp-shooter that were called Power
Sampans in the plans kit. We know Phil B. did the light dory and had
contact with Orrell. Wonder if he retained rights to any of the
"square-tailed dories" he mentions he has done "over and over"?

PS to my earlier msg on Sharpshooter - this hull is stiffened enormously by
the full deck, you will need some ribs and floors where it is not decked.
