Re: RE gypsy question and flotation
Thank you to all for the variety of suggestions on floatation
devices, but I think I like the idea of tubes made of water proofed
material. I plan on sewing a form fitted cover for my Gypsy so she
can sit upright in a cradle on the beach at the sail club. I will
purchase some extra material to make the tubes. On the other hand,
in the likely event that water seeps into the tubes, they would
become heavy and difficult to dry. Perhaps a mesh cover is best.
Bean bag beads would work well, but GHC's right: peanuts are very
accessible. I can appreciate why PKB recommends foam cushions: the
foam can be taken out of its soft case for easy drying. The soft
case would need to be water-tight for only as long as it takes to
right and bail the boat.

Why use mesh material and loose half your floatation? Why not use a coated
or waterproofed fabric - even water-proofed canvas would slow down the
water for long enough to get righted. Use a basting tape or other seam
sealer and you've got a neat idea.
