[bolger] Plywood Tests - Luan vs Para
As promised, I tested from scraps from the 1/4 inch plywoods used in my
12-footer under construction.
The samples were about 2x4 inches. They were placed in boiling water for
five minutes, then frozen overnight.
Results: mixed.
Uncoated paraply: Complete face delamination from edge to a small void
in the second ply,
no delamination in opposite face
with no voids
Epoxy-coated paraply: No delaminatiom (no voids either)
Exterior luan, coated and uncoated: No delamination (no voids)
My conclusion: Paraply is not exterior-glued, but is probably ok if coated
thoruoghly. Exterior luan is exterior-glued, go for it if you can work
around the structurally weak veneer face plys.
The failure at the void warrants more testing - I'll look for some more
samples of both materials with voids.
