Re: Phil's Retreiver and Champlain designs
Hi to those dreaming of Champlain spacious interior.
In case you have miss it, please refer to message 8788, dated last
Dec 14, where I provided further information on the one built 2 years
ago near the Rideau canal.
In a recent letter received from Bolger,( I bought the plan for
Champlain), he strongly discourages me to modify his plan, saying
that
the raised center floor and the 4 batteries + septic tank beneath it
was essential to the center of gravity of this particular design....
My 1"=1' model is by now completed, except that I'am losing my
patience in trying to finish all the details to make it look like
real!

Hello Patrick,
I have just created a Champlain folder in the Bolger group
files. If you go there, you will see a few pictures I took of a
Champlain in build down in Stuart Florida about 4 years ago.She was
being put together by a professional shop and they were kind enough
to allow me to roam the boat.
My impression of this design is that she is a BIG boat with
deceptively sweet lines.Something I was unable to appreciate from
looking at the MAIB article that Phil Bolger wrote a number of years
ago.You really have to go onboard to get a feel for all of that
interior volume.Absolutely amazing considering that from outside
appearances,she just seems odd.
The builders of this particular boat had opted to forgo the
raised center cabin floor that was to house the holding
tank, batteries and water tanks.Instead, they kept the whole interior
at the same level and only raised the forward section in way of the
helm/galley area.
Despite my professed love affair with my Micro,Champlain has
often haunted my dreams at the most inconvenient times leaving me
with that cheap and nasty feeling I suppose any cheating lover feels
when his eye begins to wonder!
If I could have my cake and eat it too,I would unhesitatingly
build myself a Champlain. The trips I would make!!!!
Sincerely,
Peter Lenihan, feeling all warm inside from memories of days spent in
Stuart Florida drooling over Champlain,as the snow gets deeper and
deeper on the banks of the St.Lawrence...........

A Champlain plies the Rideau Lakes in Ontario. It's a beautiful boat
judging by the following Web site:

John, in Victoria

I've been searching for builder info on either or both of these
designs and so far only found mention of their existence, but no
details. Anyone with direct experience of building or being aboard
who can pass on comments to me will be welcome. Thanks. Patrick.
