Re: [bolger] Updated Micro scantlings?

Pippo,

I'm happy to see that you're not considering to abort your proyect, even
being so short of time. Congratulations and... coraggio!

About the scantlings, I agree with Eric S., it has to do with the
intented use. I will put a double bottom in my micro (totalizing 6/8"),
because I want to be able to make 100 miles long runs, in a sea (the
Mediterranean) that is usually quiet, but can quickly show his claws,
with short-steppy waves. In those conditions, you'll need good solidity
(material & skill), but also, very important, you'll need peace of mind!!
P.C.B. (polychlorinated biphenyl, if I trust in my dictionary), says
about of some of his designs something like: "it will behave well in a
storm... if it held together...

Now, getting surprised by storms in the Med, Phil knows it well, and he
recomended me a 1/2" bottom, so I'm probably overkilling here.

Peter L., I like the micro-claus idea, but then, please, came to Spain
and give some presents (work) to my boat during the night :-)

Pippo,
Any guy that has a spyglass as big as the one you show on your
web page just has to be a perfectionist!Afterall,I would imagine that
the absolute very slightest movement from down at your end results in
a shift of light years at the other end,no?You can't fool us
Bolgerites for long!:-D
Sorry to hear that in optimizing your time you have only allowed
yourself 30 minutes per day for your Micro.Equally sorry that you
live so very far away as there is no way I could just sneak over
during the night, pry open the door to your shop and do a bit of
building while you sleep.Imagine the look of absolute surprise and
delight on your childrens' faces(not to mention the look of utter
shock on your wifes' face!)when you proudly show them all the progess
being made on your boat, while you sleep,by MICRO CLAUS!I'd even wear
red overalls.........
Continued success, even if it is only 30 minutes per day, with your
Micro construction!!
Sincerely,
Peter Lenihan, sensing the early symptoms of cabin fever which each
passing day,on the banks of the frozen St.Lawrence.....

Hey there! I'm not such a perfectionist... I wish I was though. I'm
trying to optimize my time... Right now there's no way to do epoxy

Cheers, Pippo

P.S.: nice girlfriend Peter!

Hello Marco,
Grazie tanto per i tuoi complimenti pero posso scrivere un poco
l'Italiano perché la mia bellicisma fidanzata e d'origine
Italiana.I
sui genitori sono di Campobasso provincia di Casacalenda.
I guess that pricing varies;up here epoxy is $185.00 per gallon
and MDO 4 X 8 about $54.00 per sheet.Depending on the weight of the
cloth, alot of epoxy could be needed.
Also, since Pippo is such a perfectionist,I was just worrying
that
he will not get to experience the bliss of sailing his Micro before
2002(or even 2003!) if he fusses too much over such details.I suppose
he wasn't kidding when he chose to call his web site"The
Ultimate....."
Good luck with your construction!
Tanti Saluti,
Peter Lenihan, with apologizes to our unilingual Bolgerites, from the
banks of the St.Lawrence..........

Hi Peter,
I want to tell you two belongingses:
1) epoxy is expensive, but also  two  layers of ply implicate the use of much epoxy.
2) your Italian is very beautiful and poetic, compliments!
Marco

Hi Pippo!,
I do not own an updated plans set(if one exists) for the Micro, but
I would be inclined and highly recommend going with the thicker
bottom.Your 10mm is nice,13mm would be better(!).However,I would feel
comfortable with Marcos' suggestion, puo usare statidi tessuto di vetro
pero questa maniera sara pui costosa perché epoxy!
The chine logs on the plans do seem a bit on the small side so if
your available dimensions in wood are a bit bigger, use it.
Sincerely,
Peter Lenihan, glad he went with a thicker bottom,on the Micro, here on
the Banks of the St.Lawrence.............

Ciao Pippo,
riciao
Marco

Hello everybody. I was wondering whether PCB has updated the Micro
scantlings so, if anybody has recently purchased a set of Micro plans
from PCB directly, I'd like to know:
1) bottom thickness
2) section of chine logs
3)any other major update
I haven't put the bottom on yet and given my terrible shortage of
time I'm having double thoughts on the double thickness bottom... So
maybe 10 mm single thickness would be enough, eventually adding the
shoes as suggested by Bernie Wolfard.
Thanks and best

Pippo
