Re: [bolger] Dear Aunty LM2 (2) Motors on big bolger boxes...
Tim -
I read your post about heaving to with some interest. When we had a transom
hung rudder on Landroval ( our martha jane) I could sheet the mizzen in
tightly, pull the rudder up ( yes up) and she would sit there like a duck
with her nose to the wind. After I built the dual rudders this did not work
anymore - without being able to pull the rudders out of the water she kept
falling off the wind and sailing away. I think the combination of windage on
the hull and the effect of the rudders does this. We have been experimenting
and have found that lashing the tiller all the way over to the side works (
to the same side she would fall off to - if you follow me). The other trick
that worked well for us was to run the outboard at it's lowest with the
tiller lashed in the center and two leeboards down slightly. If I pull the
boards up she falls off by herself even with the o/b running. What do you
think? Steve Anderson

Also, as I watch following seas trying to eat Lady Kate's transom-hung
outboard, the thought occurs...on your Atlantic crossing, what did you
do with LM2's engine? WOuld you suggest anything different in
hindsight?
