Re: [bolger] foldingschoonerinozupdate

Paul,
I gotta ask -- and I'm not starting up the "is it Doug Fir or Oregon"
thread -- do you mind passing on how much a knot-free(!!) piece of Oregon
costs down there and how rare is it?. It's darn hard to find clear fir up
here for a reasonable price. I've saved a couple of pieces of Clear
Vertical Grain Douglas Fir (it deserves to be in Caps) from a home project a
few years ago and they're going to be a mast someday.

Larry Barker
Talent, Oregon (where the firs ain't what they once wuz. Why, when I was a
kid ... ;)

Hello all I'm still out there. Folding schooner progress for th last
fortnight is zero, nill, etc. I did however, manage to find 2 lengths
of 2"x4' oregon with no knots Enough for 1 mast. Hobie hasn't sold
yet. The june bug is looking good all painted, stainless steel
rowlocks, plate for bowsprit/jib, pintles & gudgeons. Cut up another
Oregon plankfor some 8' oars with 1/2" plywood blades. Will glue them
up tomorrow. Sails have been glued and given to a friend for sewing.
Weexpect to have a launch on sunday 7th april, maybe sea trials after
easter at our favourite remote campsite, Cape Arid national Park.
See ya later, Paul Day, June Bug Botany Bay.
G'day all, been enjoyingall the many and varied topics over the last
week. Progress report as follows. sides of rear hull cut out, butt
jointed and ready. Bulkheads cut out and started framing up. I intend
to beef up (or is that sea-cow) the transomto take a 6 hp o/b, also
have to change the side of the o/b well as o/b's in Aust areusually
lefthanded. I've cut out rudder and will stick with 1/2" thick, but
have designed a swinging system for the blade. It seems a small
rudderfor a 31' dinghy. A friends 11'moth has as big a rudder.
When I ran out ofplywood yesterday Iasked my dear wife to please ring
up and order some more. She replied that due to fiscal
circumstances ........... Ihad to choose between ply or the 7 day
voyageI'd booked on the 'Leeuwin'. Well ,itlooks like the boat will
have to be delayed for a few months. I didn't even get as far as
mentioning the fibreglass sheathing and$1000 worth of epoxy Iwas
ready for. The 'Leeuwin' is a 110' square rigged barquentine that you
can sign on to crew for quite reasonable rates if you pick the right
voyage. check her out at www,leeuwin.com. By the way peter lenihan I
shall tell you my bad welding story, with all its ramifications for
the sport of 'sand yachting' on another occassion. when I've nothing
new to report on the FS. cheers for now Paul Day AUS 3
