Re: Don't Abandon Ship Due To Yahoo

I use the groups via the web, not by e-mail. Response speed has been
pathetic for last couple weeks, and is really awful the last couple
days. I hope Yahoo is going to improve that.

I don't see why they need my birthdate, but I will second the
observation that being a Yahoo member for the purpose of Yahoo e-mail
does not seem to generate spam e-mail, or whatever. I suspect they
use the profile information to choose whatever advertisements appear
to be of interest to you. Although some people object to targeted
ads, I don't see why. I see no special value in being shown ads about
stuff for teenagers.

I too had a problem with the Yahoo takeover. They thought I was my son who
has an e-mail account with them. I did not know his password, and therefore
couldn't join the list for him, so I thought I was stuck. Happily, my wife
suggested I use her dormant account. Now all is well again.

Fellow Bolgerites.
I see that several members are a little disgruntled at the YAHOO
takeover of our group. My feeling is this: this is too good to give up
because we don't like, or trust YAHOO. I'm sure we can work around
this without giving up too much of our privacy or any of our security.
Anytime we get something for "free" there are likely to some
conditions. Yahoo wants no more than most other "free" sites and they,
like most other web operations, can get all the information they need
anyhow. I know several people that have YAHOO free email and there
seems to be no intrusion. The thing about this site, like many others,
is the requirement to accept cookies. I just don't give cookies
unless forced to. This is just the price we have to pay. And this
site is not unique in this.
