If you want to play with schooner stuff, can I suggest something? I'm
not being flippant, either --
build a scow -- you can find Beam-Length and sail area ratios in
Chapelle and in Harry Sucher -- and play with master location and
leeboard location to your heart's content. Scows are pretty insensitive
to the sort of messing you are talking about, fast cheap and easy to
build, so if you get frustrated, there's not a big net loss.
And they can sail quite well. If you don't like an angular scow bow
like the "St Michaels Sailing Scow", you can round the bow and stern
somewhat like a garvey.
Keep it simple, make it simple, fool around and have fun.
