You're thinking the same as me, when it comes to X-mas gifts to me from my
wife purchased by me. Here's my reasearch so far:
Makita 1900B- this seems to have become sort of a standard. You can buy a
scarfing jig for this model in the back of Woodenboat, a big plus. Nice,
light, fits in your palm. About $139.00 at the Despot or Lowes.
Bosch- This is really nice. more powerful motor than the makita, heavier,
looks very Tuetonic. Looks like a good deal at $99.00
DeWalt- As usual, DeWalt has the specs that blow the others away. more
motor, more depth of cut, etc. about $149.00 last time I coveted one.
B&D- I swaer at Black & Decker tools. am slowly replacing those I
accumulated in my early 20s. But they just put out a power plane ay $69 and
it doesn'[t feel nearly as cheap as my B&D belt sander. And for the way
it'll get used, probably what I should get.
Meaning I'm gonna get the DeWalt, since its the most expensive. That's how
I ended up with a DeWalt table saw; always buy the most expensive tool.
You can never berate yourself later.
If you really want tool lust, get the Tools on Sale catalog from 7 conrners
Hardware in Minneapolis. Awesome catalog, must be 30 differnet models of
powerplaners.

Bolger Boat Builders --
Christmas is coming and I think I'd like to put a power planer on my
wish list.
All I know about power planers is that surfboard shapers covet Skil100s
(discontinued.) I found a used one on line for $400 and he was happy to
pay that for it.
I'd like to find something a little less expensive. Which ones do you
all like, and why?
Yours in boat building,
