Don -
Great!
The ferry out of Essex NY will get you over to Charlotte, VT, just north of
where you want to be. Take the ferry road (F-5) out to Route 7. Take a right
on route 7 and follow the previously posted directions south to Kingsland
Bay.

Hi guys, I just joined this group. I live near Plattsburgh, NY, which
is right on Lake Champlain. And I have built a Bolger boat,
the 'Teal' (straight from the pages of Dynamite Payson's book,
Instant Boats). Finished the hull last year, I've been rowing it on
local rivers; working on the rigging, rudder and leeboard as we speak.
This weekend's event at Kingsland Bay State Park sounds
interesting. I had to look it up, but it's just north of the Lake
Champlain Maritime Museum at Basin Harbor, which I'm familiar with.
I have to work Saturday afternoon, but will try to make it down
Sunday, with the Teal in the back of my truck - barring any unforseen
family obligations.
It's good to find a forum like this, I look forward to many
interesting discussions.

David,
I plan to bring my Bolger catamaran and a change of plans makes it necessary to use the ramp at
Converse Bay. If its possible, would you post the address of that ramp. Various available mapping
software routines will allow a map and driving instructions then to be created.
Thanks a lot,
See you in Kingsland

Hello Jack,
We'll need to get the date of next years Mahone Bay Wooden Boat
Festival before setting a date for the SECOND ANNUAL LAKE CHAMPLAIN
PHIL BOLGER MESSABOUT so that you may join us with your"new"MICRO!By
then we may also have another new MICRO from the shop of Paul
Lefebvre!
With any kind of luck,we will have beautiful weather for the 1st
annual messabout and thus inspire more to attend next years.
To date the following have expressed their intentions:
David Cassidy;Elegant Punt
David Galvin ;Shoe Box,Tortise or Pirogue
David Jost ;Diablo and/or Pointy Skiff
Paul Lefebvre;Klepper...MICRO builder
Peter Lenihan;Micro
Lincoln Ross ;Brick or Nymph
Not a bad start(rather nice,in fact) but more(much more) would
certainly be welcomed! It sure would be nice to see David Ryan and his
boats and that Micro from the"capt'" who posted his wonderful picture
a while ago!The most anticipated boat however, would have to be Stan
Mullers SNOW GOOSE!I would almost pay to see her on the
water.Unfortunately,I think Stan lives too far away and he may not yet
be finished. He is keeping the rest of us nuts in suspense with his
unusual silence here in the group!(are you reading this Stan?Come
clean with us now,we're all friends here and afflicted more or less
with the same malaise concerning boats)
Best of luck in the races even though it sure sounds like a bit of
friendly competition is called for ;-) and do not forget to ask the
good folks at the festival for next years dates!
Sincerely,
Peter Lenihan, wondering how many more will join the fun in Kingsland
Bay this August 4 & 5............

Paul,
Please bring the strip built kayak. I would love to see it! Glad
to hear your Micro plans are still active. We could have a Northeast
regatta in a couple of years. New boat rules for racing would need
to be devised of course to stay in the spirit of Bolger boating.
You can try out Diablo and/or Pointy Skiff.

My wife and I plan to attend, though as a still-aspiring micrologist I will
not be bringing any Bolger boats - we'll no doubt bring our Nautiraid
folding kayak with its vintage cotton Klepper sails, as it accompanies us
most everywhere we might encounter water. I may also bring along one of my
strip-built kayaks to show I'm not just all talk and daydreams; or perhaps
to show my sincerity as a bolgerado, I'll just bring the Micro sails I sewed
this winter, which are eagerly awaiting masts to be hung from and a Micro to
float them.....
Funds have once again been secured, the shop is almost cleared out, and
construction is slated to start in September. So, Peter, I am coming, to
gather inspiration from seeing Lestat on the water, running before the wind!

I am moving into new office space today, and just returned from vacation.
I'll be up at the lake this weekend, so I will actually drive the route
(I've always gone by boat),check the maps and street names and post
directions next week.
I'll also get directions for the boat launch in Converse Bay.
We had a LOT more thn three of us who, in the deepest darkest days of
winter, said they would be attending. Hmmmm. You would think the promise of
learning about that new Bolger design would get a few folks motivated.

This is easy.
I like to use a 2.5 gallon plastic jug of water from the store.
I make a shelf where the jug is mounted so that it will not fall or
be tossed out by boat motion and so that the spout is easy to reach.
This gives me cold water.
There are only two things that I need hot water for, drinks (coffee) and
a shower. In both cases I use either a small stove to heat a pot of
water
if I am in a hurry or I hang a pot of water above my kerosene lamp if
I am using the lamp.
For a shower I use a pump sprayer and replace the spray wand with a
spray nozzle made for the kitchen sink. I can get a good shampoo and
shower in about 1 gallon of water. I gave up shaving simi-permantly
right after I escaped from the Naval Academy. :-))
I have sailed (and powered) boats from 8' to 500' and the only reason
I would choose a larger boat today is if I need it to carry stores
for the trip I am taking.
The thing that those big yachts are best for is the party at the dock
and if you arrive in a cool, tiny boat you are likely to get invited
to the party anyway. :-))

Greetings Peter et al. Trully wish I could make it to the messabout, but as
I indicated many months ago, your chosen weekend falls exactly on the
wrap-up weekend for the Mahone Bay Wooden Boat Festival. We'll be pitting
our June Bug and Gypsy against the myriad Windsprints and Light Schonners in
the annual races. A sneaky way to harvest trophies since our two boats will
be the only one's in their class. Ya do wha'cha gotta do. Hope the messabout
is a grand time for all. I especially hope it turns into an annual event. If
it does I would definitely strive to have my Micro fully restored and
trailerable for next year. Look forward to hearing reports.
jeb, planning to launch kayak #2 from the shores of Fundy this very night!

Lincoln,
Oooops!Sorry to hear that the ice is for really serious stuff. And
if it prevents you from building, then serious it is!I hope things heal
up fast for you but do not stack two boats on the roof rack. This may
lead to more then just injuries.......
Take care!
Sincerely,
Peter Lenihan

Hi David!
We are now up to five confirmed attendees!Sorry to hear that
FIREFLY won't make it(I understand how things can get this way near
the final stages of building ;-) ) So you just gotta bring the other
boats!!Hopefully there will be a motor on MISS DIABLO to make late
night beer/ice runs to the nearest marina........I might just share
with you the shower system I rigged for my MICRO and it is pressurized
to boot! But this will have to wait until we meet up in Kingsland Bay!
See you there!
Sincerely,
Peter Lenihan, confirmed boat nut,on the shores of the St.Lawrence...

Ice packs are for recovery from an injury which is keeping me from

Lincoln,
Welcome aboard! Now we are up to 4 attendees. Now what is this about
dependence on ice packs?I couldn't survive if I had to drink my beer
warm.......arrrgh!For longer stays on my MICRO,when going home to get
more ice packs is not practical, ice blocks work just fine.Up to three
days,in fact! However,I do keep two coolers on board. One for the blocks
of ice and the other for essentials. Then I can almost double the life
span of the ice.
Why not bring both your BRICK and NYMPH?Armadas always work best
with lots of boats......a good show of force!
See you in KINGSLAND BAY!,
Sincerely,
Peter Lenihan

There is no way on Earth that I would miss this opportunity to get
together with other nuts like myself who spend perfectly good money
to build boats.
However, you will all need to look at my OLD Bolger boats. Miss
Diablo will be in attendance (assuming nobody stole her motor) and
perhaps a very beat up Pointy Skiff. Unfortunately, the Micro
called "Firefly" will not be in attendance. An unexpected series of
graduate courses in addition to job interviews for an educational
administrative position have slowed work on her to a crawl.
Yesterday and today were spent building the keel plate that will
hold the rudder. I rabbeted a 1/4" groove in the keel and
temporarily afixed the bronze plating in place. Then, built the
rudder a' la Bolger. I hope to finish that piece this week.
The boat needs (which will not happen by August 4th)
a deck
mast step
fiberglassing
painting
trailer
registration
That is an awful lot to do in what amounts to 40 hours of free
time.
On another note, a perfectly good building day was wasted
yesterday travelling to Westport, CT to sit on a friends 60'
powerboat/house. We spent the day trying not to spill on the carpet,
damage the gelcoat, making lists of things to fix...you get the
idea. the engine room was impressive, twin 650ci diesel engines
propel this monster across LI sound at a whopping 28kts. I don't
know about you, but for that kind of power I would hope for at least
70kts. I have been on shorter sailboats (blowboats to you
stinkpotters) that can do 12kts without much trouble for half the
money of this thing. OK, they don't have tubs, jacuzzis, full galley,
washer/dryer. But they do hold 12 crew in slave style accomodations.
He lives on this boat for most of the year (I think his wife threw
him out) so I guess the two bathrooms and all the electronic gear
make sense. To be honest, I have just as much fun on my homemade
boats for a fraction of what it costs him for just one day on the
water.
Now to figure out how to rig a hot/cold running water system
for "Firefly".
We will be coming to the messabout from Killington, VT. a short
hop!

Good to hear from you David!
Alright now,we have three confirmed attendees...maybe if the
weather is really nice then Peter V. can drive a little bit
faster, pick up his daughter a little bit sooner and take a quick side
trip back through the Kingsland Bay area :-)...lets keep our fingers
crossed for nice weather and more boats!
Since my Pesky crew is going to have to drive down and you seem
to know there area well, how about a drivers direction to Kingsland
Bay?Since she will be coming down from Montréal,I imagine she should
get on Interstate 89 going south. Is there an exit off this interstate
leading to Kingsland Bay?
Sincerely,
Peter Lenihan...MICRO attendee........

I'm planning on being there. Thanks to inertia and other demands I
never managed to start building another boat this spring. That limits
me to bringing either the 16' Pirogue, or the Shoe Box and the
Tortoise (they nest). I guess I'll decide the night before I leave,

I had hoped to attend, but it looks like my plans have been foiled by
a family obligation. Ironically, I am required to drive across NY
state that weekend to retrieve my daughter from her summer
educational program. I am counting on many and good pictures.

An amusing, but short stop on the way is Carleton's Prize. Very small,
steep, rocky island. It's got a lot of rusty looking spots on it.
Legend has it that a British captain named Carleton shot it up with
his cannons in the fog during the war of 1812. I'm skeptical as I
haven't seen any cannonballs, and I've dived around there. I think
this is 20 or 30 miles north of the messabout, but you can find it on
your charts. Just off the south end of Grand Isle between Providence
and Stave Islands. Occasionally a good fishing spot, at least years
ago. Also shallow areas south of Stave.

Hate to disappoint you, but Champ has been captured and put to work in
the "Champ" car wash on Rt. 7 in Shelburne. Don't know if it's still
there. This would make the 1993 sighting false, unless they give it
holidays.

There is at least one State campground in the vicinity, and I think there is
most likely several privates. I will get the info and post it here next
week.

To me one of the most interesting of all those wrecks on the bottom of
Lake Champlain is a horse powered ferry. This is written up in October,
1989 National Geographic. The horses walk on a turntable on deck, amidships,
driving amidships paddle wheels. The paddles appear to be about 5-6 ft
tall. Hull length was 63 ft., Beam 20 ft. Bow and stern were identical and
the boat could make "headway" in either direction. The horses walked in the
same direction and gears were used to reverse the thrust.
These apparently made regular runs across the lake fom Bulington to Port
Kent. Horse powered ferries were apparently popular before the age of steam,
being used also in the south and west.

I'm all for the UNorganized messabout!!Besides, there are just too
many variables to contend with at the best of times and who needs the
stress......when fun lays waiting!
Thanks for correcting me regarding which mountain ranges will be
nestling us.That's what happens when one relys too much on the memory
of cable t.v. programs from 25 years ago, just before chucking the
tube in the trash can. Can't say I've missed it much either.....
I will be bringing my MICRO down(along with my pesky crew) and
look forward to the cruise along the Richelieu River and onto Lake
Champlain. Many historical naval battles were fought along this whole
stretch between the French,British and Americans. There is a brief
review of some of the recent archaeological work under taken by the
Champlain Maritime Museum in the latest issue of MAIB.With so many
sunken craft in the lake,I've often wondered if the sightings of
CHAMP were not perhaps various bits of one of these craft briefly
brought to the surface by a combination of underwater springs and
unreleased gasses from decay. But then again,CHAMP makes for much more
interesting bedtime story telling, while anchoured in some dark and
lonely cove, late at night, with strange bubbling sounds coming up from
bellow,when all the bullfrogs... suddenly....stop....croaking.....!
Sincerely,
Peter Lenihan, confirmed MICRITE planning to pick up all the necessary
charts soon so that the pesky crew can better understand the voyage
route, from the shores of the St.Lawrence where it is -20 Celsius and
I don't even want to mention the chill factor............

this camp site is in the southern part of the lake just before but
not too far from Kingsland Bay. I found this on the state web site.
Vermont has very well run state park / campgrounds. I have stayed at
Gifford Woods many times, and it was always a wonderful experience.
Too bad there does not seem to be camping at Kingsland Bay state Park.
David Jost
"ready to make the final cut on the rudder stock (the part where the
blade attaches)." rounding off a 4X4 was not too bad once I bought a
spokeshave. cutting the stock on a little table saw is a trick.
Button Bay, a 253-acre park, is located on a bluff in Ferrisburgh
along the 130-mile long Lake Champlain. Historically, the area has
been visited by such notables as Samuel De Champlain (1609), Ethan
Allen (1776), Ben Franklin (1776), and Benedict Arnold (1777). What
once operated as a farm, opened as a state park in 1964. The park is
so named for the button-like concretions formed by clay deposits found
along the shoreline.
Facilities: The camping area is generally an open, grassy area
overlooking Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Mountains to the west.
There are 73 sites including 13 lean-tos. Flush toilets, hot showers
($), and a dump station are provided. The
park has a play area and a swimming pool with lifeguards. There are a
picnic area and a large open picnic shelter pavilion for large group
gatherings. Boating (rentals available), fishing, and sailing are
popular on Lake Champlain. You can explore Button Point Natural Area,
a small mature hardwood forest, hike the trail, and visit the Nature
Center.
Area Attractions: Lake Champlain Maritime Museum, Crown Point, Chimney
Point, Fort Ticonderoga, Shelburne Museum, Lake Champlain Ferries, and
the Morgan Horse Farm in Middlebury.

Hi Bolgerites -
I staunchly support a totally UNorganized Messabout. Everyone show up and
let's see what we can come up with. Races, gunkholing the bays, capsizing
contests, whatever. I will be happy to scout out the names and locations of
some likely motels/campgrounds (though, I can't vouch for any accomodations
or conditions), provide directions, etc.
I'll be bringing the Elegant Punt, "Whispering Jesse." She is a rowing-only
punt right now, but I have most of the sailing bits ready to finish, so she
should be a sailing punt by then. Here's a rather uninspired shot of her:

Hi Bolgerites!
There are only 180 days left before the Lake Champlain Bolger
Messabout(weekend of August 4th and 5th,2001) and at last count there
were 8 Bolgerites attending or at least expressing the desire to do
so.
Thanks to the reconnoitring talents of David C. and his links to
some rather alluring photos of the lake,KINGSLAND BAY is where the
fun will be taking place.
For any Bolgerites within driving distance who are still in
the"shopping around"phase, this may be an excellent opportunity to
come see a BOLGER BOAT in the flesh and finally take the plunge. For
those going through the"highs and lows" of getting your Bolger Boat
built/finished,the Messabout might just give you that little extra
boost to make it through the home stretch. And finally, for all the
proud owner/builders of a Bolger Boat, this is an enjoyable way to
show-off your baby, compare notes and perhaps even inspire others to
build!
Also, and this is where it gets interesting,we run the risk of
having a really fine time in a grand setting nestled in between the
Green Mountains to the East and the White Mountains to the West(or is
it the other way around?).
At any rate,for those within a reasonable/practical distance(and
you all know who you are) consider keeping the weekend of August 4th
and 5th free and come join in the fun at KINGSLAND BAY!
And that is about as formal and structured as I would make
it.Anyone willing to"organize" a bit of racing etc.....?
Finally, all those who have to date either expressed an interest
to attend or who are in fact attending, perhaps we should post this
along with the boat(s) we are will be bringing so that others(the
undecided/unsure/curious gang) will have an idea of what to expect
seeing at the messabout.
Sincerely,
Peter Lenihan,on the snowy shores of the St.Lawrence......
