Re: William D Jochems
Hi again Bruce,
Yes this is a Bolger design. If you go back to about mesg 98 or so on
this site, Bjorn talks about it. Also there are some photos of the
prototype at:
http://www.ace.net.au/schooner/jochems.htm#start
I believe Mr. Bolger felt it more or less was the next step up on
the "Birdwatcher" type configuration and suggests it to anyone
attracted to "Whalewatcher".
It is water ballasted, shoal draft, and suitable for canal cruising
as well as coasting. And is still trailerable!
Hope this helps.

Ah, I thought it was a bolger design, and I wanted to know which one, so I
could study the plans.

Hi Bruce,
Are you referring to the photos in the file with that name?
If you are, then that IS the boat that it is in the photos! The man
who built it is Bjorn Harbo from Oslo, Norway. I just received a note
from Bjorn that he will be continuing his sea trials early Saturday
morning and a friend of mine is hopefully going to get some action
photos.
I believe the boat is named after the man who commisioned the

Dear Fellow WDJ Builders - current and future,
I ordered a new set of plans from PCB a couple of weeks ago - I
failed to make my own back up copies...
When they arrived yesterday I noticed that the plans were upgraded
12/12/00. The upgrade involve substantial changes of the leeboard
mounts and the construction of the water ballast tanks.
If you do not have the upgraded plans already: get them! For me it is
probably too late, or I will have to do some major surgery on the
work to get access to the parts in question.
The changes seem very reasonable to me although PCB claims they are
not 100% necessary on WDJ. The reason for the upgrade were problems
on a larger boat of similar construction.
Happy Holidays to all of you!

Dear Fellow Bolger Boat Builders
Just received and watched the video that Susanne
and Phil have produced (starring William D Jochems as William D Jochems).
Beautiful!! The Boat is a jewel (not only because her name is Sapphire). For me
who is building the boat it is next to phantastic to see what is hopefully going
to be the result of my work, of the money I have spent and of the many hours I
have NOT spent on other projects that my wife thinks I should have offered more
attention...
The film shows WDJ (both man and boat!) from any
angle and it is amazing how attractive the boat is both in profile and en face.
Seeing her under sail in the light breeze of Lake Mead (imagine a huge lake in
the middle of a dessert!) is simply a totally different picture than I had
imagined.
Also very interesting are the sequences showing the
view from the cabin through the many panorama windows - as if you were on deck.
Both Phil Bolger and Bill Jochems contribute with intelligent comments on the
design and its philosophy. Bill is obviously proud of and happy with his
boat and very satisfied with the performance. He has done a marvelous
job.
Enough! Norwegian English is better when kept
short!
Get the film. Watch it. Once, twice, thrice(?).
Perhabs you too will buy the plans and build the boat!

Three new pictures uploaded today (and yes, Gregg, they are
compressed!). Pippo, please notice the ply (3/4 inch) framing.
The side panels were glued together today and will be fitted to the
bottom/bulkheads in a few days.

Yes, that's too big... (considering Egroups only gives us 20 meg). I used
Thumbs-Plus to compress it under 100K and reloaded. Here's a link for it:

I started in March and hope to launch her next summer. If you can build
her in your own heated garage (or if the climate is right) it shouldn't
take more than three or four months.

Two new pictures from the building progress of my schooner uploaded today. They were taken couple of months ago. Not much building in July. The pics show the building site in my father's back yard and the cradle which was not yet finished. The panels were cut and coated on my balcony and in my tiny garden. The side panels are supposed to be butt strapped together and glass coated in one piece; i.e. 25 ft. My balcony is not that long... I had to glass coat the panels one by one and will be taping and butt strapping them together before attaching them to the bottom and bulkheads. This weekend I glued up the shoe of the bottom (two layers of 3/4 ply, abt 2 feet wide).
I hope it is allright with you for me to upload the relativly small jpg's to this site as I have trouble fixing my home page.
Bjørn
Excellent - I'll have a look...
