[bolger]Re:Lake Champlain Bolger Messabout

Here is some lodging information for the LAKE CHAMPLAIN BOLGER
MESSABOUT, Kingsland Bay, Ferrisburgh, VT, August 4-5, 2001.

For those who are thinking of camping, here are a few places to check
out.

Button Bay State Park
5 Button Bay State Park Road
Vergennes, VT 05491
Phone: 802-475-2377 (summer)
or 800-658-1622 (Jan.-May)
Web site: www.state.vt.us/anr/fpr/parks/button
Open: Mid May - Columbus Day
Base Rate: $13 - $19
Go 1/2 mile south on Vt. Route 22A from Vergennes, then west on Panton
Road for approximately 61/2 miles to reach beautiful Button Bay State
Park, located on the shores of Lake Champlain. Available are 72 tent
sites and 13 lean-tos, all on open grassy sites. The park has a swimming
pool and picnic area, as well as a nature museum and nature trail. Lake
Champlain provides great opportunities for boating and fishing
activities. A boat launch is available near the park and boats are also
rented at the park. A large picnic pavilion is present for rent to those
with larger groups. No camper hookups are available at the park. MC/VISA.

(This is probably the best place for those who would like to camp during
the messabout. For those who might be wondering "Why don't we just have
the Messabout at this state park - they have a beach, etc?" -- While it
is a very nice park, the beach is not a sandy beach, but a rock ledge. it
gets very slippery by the middle of summer, and i did not see any way to
launch boats there.)

Another state park that is close by:

Mt. Philo State Park
5425 Mt. Philo Road
Charlotte, VT 05445
Phone: 802-425-2390 (summer)
or 800-658-1622 (Jan.-May)
Open: Mid May - Mid October
Base Rate: $11 - $17
This park is located atop scenic Mt. Philo in Charlotte. The mountain
overlooks the Champlain Valley and the Adirondack Mountains of New York.
A narrow steep road (not recommended for trailers) provides access to the
top of the mountain. This small wooded camping area on the mountainside
has a total of 7 tent sites and 3 lean-tos. Toilets and hot showers are
provided. The mountain top picnic area provides spectactular views. An
enclosed picnic shelter is available for large group gatherings. Swimming
and boating are available at nearby Button Bay and Kingsland Bay State
Parks.
Numerous attractions and activities are available along nearby Lake
Champlain. MC/VISA accepted.

This is a private campground in Shelbourne, just north of Charlotte and
Ferrisburgh (where Kingsland Bay is located):
Shelburne Camping Area
4385 Shelburne Road, Route 7
Shelburne, VT 05482
Phone: 802-985-2540
Fax: 802-985-8132
Email:shelbcamp@...
Open: 4/1 - 11/1
Open on limited schedule Nov-March
Base Rate: $18 - $26
76 sites. 1 mile north of Shelburne Museum on Route 7 . Take I-89 Exit
13; follow Rte. 7 south 5 miles. Large premium sites. 2 pools, cable TV,
family restaurant, modern, comfortable motel rooms. 2 miles to Lake
Champlain boat launch, walking and bike path; 1 mile to shopping, golf,
churches; 3 miles to Vermont Teddy Bear, Shelburne Farms; 4.5 miles to
Burlington, colleges, beaches. Modem hookup. The Bissonette Family.

For those who are thinking of staying in a motel, there are several along
Route 7 in Shelbourne and Charlotte, including some national chains like
Days Inn, Econo Lodge and Holiday Inn. You can expect to pay $80 - $120
per night for a summer weekend. Some of the private motels may be much
cheaper, and their are several along the same road.

Unless there is something major happening that weekend, you should have
no problem just driving in and finding a room. If you would like a
listing of possibilities, I suggest that you try going to any of the
numerous web sites that have yellow pages listings (
http://www.yahoo.com, for example) and enter "Shelburne, VT" or
"Charlotte, VT." Anything that is located on Route 7 is good.

It is probably a 15 - 20 minute drive to the Kingland Bay beach from this
area of Route 7 in Shelburne.
(When we launch our boat in the spring, I will go and drive the route,
get directions and and let you all know exactly how long it takes).

I've not stayed at any of these places, so I cannot offer an opinion. I
do know that Vt. state campgrounds have an excellent reputation and all
of the others I have stayed in were great.

Of course, if you are equipped, you can always stay on your boat. There
are numerous anchorages in and around Kingsland Bay (including right off
the beach -- I would not advise anyone to think about pitching a tent on
the beach at Kingsland Bay.)

Point Bay Marina is the closest place to try for a rental slip or
mooring. They are about 2-1/2 miles across the water from Kingsland Bay
(very convenient). Here's what they look like :
