Re: Big Tortoise or Brick designs

Don't know anything about the Big Tortoise, but the Brick carries two
large people without seeming to be anywhere near its capacity and with
lots of elbow room and amazing leg room. I think Bolger may be right
about "4 men and a scared dog". Sails reasonably well and is very
stable. Mast is kinda long when put on top of car, but still easy to
deal with. Easy for two people to put on top of car, quite awkward for
one, though it can be done. Rowing is nothing to write home about, but
I've rowed about a mile upwind with it when the wind was too much for
me to set up the boom again after it got loose while adjusting things.

I suspect either would be a good choice. If the Big Tortoise retains
the middle seat of the small one, you might consider leaving it out if
you're going to sail much. If you're not going to sail, I think you
might find something else that would row just a bit better. In that
case, it might be harder to build the hull, but there would be no rig
to mess with.

I'm working up the nerve to build my first boat. Since I'm not an
experienced wordworker, I thought that I would build the simplest
Bogler design, the Tortoise (Instant Boats by Payson). The drawback
is that the Tortoise is basically a one-man boat. I want something
that wasn't limited to one person so I looked at the Brick. Then I
noticed that the designs offered by Common Sense Boats and Instant
Boats differ in that CSB offers an 8'x4' boat and IB offers an
8'x3'2" boat, which is really a "stretch" Tortoise. I'm favoring the
stretch Tortoise from Payson. It would be a little lighter and
easier to cartop. It would also be a better rowing boat. I know
that this group is not lacking in the opinion area, so I would
appreciate some input from this very knowledgeable and experienced
group.
