Now building these oars definitely looks like something requiring "specialist
skills"! Not only are they tapered, but the cross-section varies from round
at the loom to oval approaching the blade. These oars are definitely works of
art!

Just looked it up in the past issues and found a complete mathematical
description of the process. It written by Ernest Murphy, and it's called
"Mast making mathematics". Its in July 1, 1994, Vol 12, no 4. He calls the
construction method "Swallow tailed mast building.) This article came out
