About This Design

The Albion dory is one of Jeff Spira’s most popular ply-on-frame powerboat designs, created for builders who want a roomy, open boat that’s straightforward to construct and easy to modify. Its wide bottom and generous flare give it excellent stability at rest, while the long, straight hull makes it efficient under power. Many builders choose the Albion because it can carry a family, gear, or deck chairs with ease—perfect for relaxed days on lakes and rivers. Like most Spira plans, it’s designed around standard lumber and plywood, making it approachable even for first-time builders.

One of the Albion’s strengths is how flexible it is in layout and finish. Builders customize the interior, and add consoles, decking, or storage to suit their needs. The structure is classic Spira construction: simple frames on a strongback, plywood sides and bottom bent around the skeleton, and fiberglass sheathing. The design’s broad stern can handle a range of outboards, and many Albions run reliably with motors between 30 and 60 horsepower, providing solid performance without needing expensive materials or advanced techniques.

On the water, the Albion is known for its steady handling and predictable behavior. It planes easily, tracks well, and offers plenty of interior space for moving around—one of the reasons it’s become a favorite with casual cruisers and picnic boaters. The flat bottom makes beaching and shallow-water exploring effortless, and the simple lines turn heads at ramps and boat shows. For many builders, the Albion represents the best of Spira’s philosophy: an honest, practical boat that delivers big satisfaction from a straightforward build.
