About This Design

John Welsford's Seagull is a recreational rowing boat designed for efficient propulsion with an emphasis on stability and practical use. The boat can carry passengers or camping gear with little effect on rowing efficiency. The hull form is intended to move easily at a steady pace under oars while remaining capable in a range of conditions. Seagull is three sided and built using plywood simple stitch-and-glue construction similar to other Welsford designs, with long, fair curves that simplify assembly. The design can be kept lightweight with appropriate materials and also includes a reinforced transom suitable for fitting a small outboard motor, though it is primarily optimized for rowing.

Building a Welsford Seagull

I love to row. My go-to rowboat for a decade or so has been a Devlin Oarling II. It’s a great boat and has taken me on many adventures. But I’d like something that has more initial stability and can take a passenger or two.

I’m looking for a quick build, relatively simple. After asking around and researching, I settled on John Welsford’s Seagull. It has a flat bottom and single chine. Should have a lot more initial stability. Sounds like it’s a delight to row. And it has more capacity than my dory.

All good in theory. I’m looking forward to building one to find out.
